Optimized Thermal Systems, Inc. (OTS) and the International Copper Association, Ltd. (ICA) have developed an educational program to broaden the exposure of students, academics and professionals to the concept of tube-fin heat exchangers using small diameter Microgroove™ tubes.

MicroGroove tube heat exchangers are one key to reducing environmental impacts and lowering overall costs while increasing the energy efficiency of HVAC&R systems. Use of smaller tube diameters can reduce refrigerant charge allowing operation at the pressures and charges associated with natural, flammable and low-GWP refrigerants. This technology also enables compact designs with less material consumption and better thermal performance.

The purpose of the educational program, which is to be conducted throughout the Spring of 2017, is to engage people from various institutions and backgrounds in a collaborative effort to advance the art of tube-fin heat exchangers. We would like to invite you to participate in this program which will, amongst other things, grant you access to the following:

  1. Comprehensive material presenting the benefits of tube size reduction in the context of tube-fin heat exchangers;
  2. A demonstration and trial version of CoilDesigner®, a proprietary tool for air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger modeling and simulation, where users can explore the performance of tube-fin heat exchangers with small diameters using the novel correlations developed;
  3. Webinars focused on air-to-refrigerant heat exchanger design, parameterization and optimization;
  4. A 5-mm tube heat exchanger for use in instruction and/or lab testing; participants able to conduct performance tests in their own facilities are encouraged to share their findings.
